Is Bowen Yang leaving Saturday Night Live this weekend?

Is there any chance at all that Bowen Yang leaves Saturday Night Live at some point this weekend? Well, this is a rumor that has started to circulate all over social media and Reddit over the past few days … but here’s a reminder that “rumor” and “fact” are two very different things.

So where is all of this coming from? Well, it seems to be a handful of different things. Yang has been an on-screen presence at SNL since 2019, and this is around the time that a lot of successful cast members do depart. Meanwhile, there are people who have read into comments made by his podcast co-host Matt Rogers suggesting that this weekend is especially important to him. We do think that’s true, but it may have more to do with his Wicked co-star Ariana Grande hosting with Cher, someone he has long adored, serving as a musical guest.

It is true that Saturday Night Live does occasionally have midseason departures, with Cecily Strong serving as one of the most recent examples. Given that the series has a hiatus coming, you can also argue that there will be time for Lorne Michaels and the producers to reset without Bowen on board. However, there is no actual confirmation or credited reporting that suggests that he will be saying goodbye this weekend. It could still happen, but this is a “we’ll believe it when we see it” situation.

No matter when Yang decides to leave Studio 8H, we really just want there to be a proper send-off for him, similar to what we had for Strong, Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, and some other cast members over years. What we hate is when there is an exit that feels sudden and we don’t have any real time to honor their contributions — Heidi Gardner and Ego Nwodim over the past year are good examples of that.

Of course, we’ll be watching this weekend’s SNL curious to see what happens.
