Only Murders in the Building season 5 episode 6: The Oliver surprise

Only Murders in the Building season 5 episode 6 has now come and gone on Hulu, and we are pleased to learn quite a bit overall — especially about Oliver.
After all, who would’ve imagined that for such a larger-than-life guy, his actual backstory would be a little bit more humble? This is someone who grew up in the foster system in Flatbush, where he struggled to find his place for a long time. That is before he eventually discovered the theater and much about him started to take shape.

Speaking to TVLine, executive producer John Hoffman had the following to say about telling this particular story with Martin Short’s character front and center:
“It was something we had thought about, and I just loved subverting the idea that he was always the Bon Vivant — the big mouth, the pied piper … Knowing that, actually, that personality was born out of a very different experience growing up, was interesting to me.”
What also feels interesting is the idea that at some point, Oliver may actually move out of the Arconia with Loretta and the two could start fresh. This creates a big problem for the trio, mostly as they try to figure out if the podcast still works as it once did. Howard may think on some level that it is all going to be fine, but we’ve learned over the years that one small change to your environment can end up shifting everything. These are things that are really hard to predict far in advance, and we will just have to wait and see how it all lands.
