‘Mad Men’ season 7 spoilers: Matthew Weiner talks imagery; we wonder end times

Mad MenThere are times in which we wonder whether or not Matthew Weiner considers “Mad Men” the television equivalent of an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, one where every sense matters from what you see or hear to even the atmosphere that is presented to you. Even something like eating is never “busy work” for the actors; it, and the imagery associated with it, all has a purpose.

While Weiner may say that he is trying to keep the final season of the show out of his mind to the best of his ability, we have to be a little honest here: How possible is that, really? This is a show that has consumed more than a decade of his life when you include the pre-pilot stage, and you have to think that he is the sort of mastermind who thinks up ideas long before making them into anything.

Speaking about this very idea of some sort of closing thought or imagery to Fox News, Weiner made it clear that while the wheels are turning in his brain, he does not want to find himself in a position where he ends up giving anything significant away in terms of the story:

“What to leave the audience with is what I’ve been thinking about, and I have an image. But I don’t want to oversell it … Honestly, I’m in denial about the show ending. But we’ll get to it when we get to it – and then it will be on the air.”

For us, what we would like to see is the real process of change take place during the final episodes of the series, regardless of what form that it may take. Is this best represented by the hands of time? Seeing the transition into 1970 in the show’s closing seconds could fit the bill, and perhaps be much more prudent to our imaginations than just giving us a flash-forward to an elderly Don Draper telling his grandchildren about his time as an ad man.

What sort of structure do you want to see moving through to the final scenes of “Mad Men”? We very much want to hear your thoughts on the matter below, and be sure to also click here to see what Vincent Kartheiser has to say about the idea of the show moving forward.
