‘True Blood’ season 6, episode 3 review: Sarah Newlin is back; Sookie meets Billith

Steve Newlin“True Blood” continued its third season on Sunday night, and did so with an episode that packed itself quite a punch. There were some stunning moments for sure, but also the real sense that there is a war brewing that has many complicated sides, and nothing is particularly set in stone.

The war – The first real interesting wrinkle in this mess was finding out that Governor Burrell’s daughter Willa actually has no interest at all in helping her dad, and instead seemingly wants to have Eric on her side. Survival played a role here, sure, but her hatred for her father also seems to be doing the same thing.

Just when it seemed like Eric had gotten himself an ace, the Governor closed in on him. Tara has Willa somewhere right now, but we don’t know where.

The Newlins – Remember Sarah? Well, Anna Camp returned this week to get a bit of much-appreciated reveal as to what she has been up to, and that she is now helping to destroy Steve and everything that he now stands for as a part of the Vampire League.

The wolves – The werewolves continue to be the weakest part of the show, mostly because their stories seem to be almost all about  watching Emma be tossed around like a rag doll, and also Joe Manganiello taking off his shirt. Sam now has Emma yet again, and he is also trying his best to save Nicole, the “activist” who has shown kindness to him.

The Stackhouse family -Sookie is struggling to handle what is happening with Niall and the hunt for Warlow, especially with having Ben re-enter the picture. One of the other issues here came via the arrival of Bill Compton back at her house, in a desperate attempt to get her blood to save her race. Even though she said no, it is looking more and more like Sookie is still in trouble no matter how hard that she tries.

All in all, this made for a heck of an entertaining hour of television, but we cannot say that it was particularly revolutionary or fantastic. It was successful in doing what it set out to do (further the story of the humans vs. vampires war, and to show that Jason Stackhouse’s life is truly in jeopardy), but that is about it.
