The Golden Bachelor spoilers: New Mel Owens poster

As many of you may know at this point, The Golden Bachelor is going to be premiering on ABC next month — and absolutely, there are still conversations to be had!

What is the biggest one? Well, from where we stand, it has every bit to do with whether or not the network made a mistake sticking with Mel Owens as the lead. We imagine that they are hoping viewers get past the comments he made on a podcast earlier this year about not wanting women over 60 on his season; he has since walked them back, but some of the damage has already been done.

For a prime example of this, just take a look at the comments under a post on the official The Golden Bachelor Instagram, one meant to feature the poster for Mel’s season. The bulk of the reaction is negative, but will this actually impact the ratings? That remains to be seen. We tend to believe that the producers see appeal in Owens due to him having a pro-sports background and will generate attention among those who are not chronically-online. However, at the same time this is a franchise in need of some sort of win. Grant Ellis’ season seems to be largely forgotten at this point, and the bulk of Bachelor in Paradise has faced criticism for the twist to introduce a monetary prize at the end of the season. They opted not to recast Mel and yet, here we are.

Over the next month, we are pretty darn curious to see how ABC promotes this show, including if they have Mel turn up during the Paradise finale and/or reunion. For now, it seems like there are a number of possibilities in play.
