Following some controversial past comments made on a podcast, we almost expected ABC to walk back their decision of naming Mel Owens The Golden Bachelor. Not only did that not happen, at least some of the show has already filmed!

So how has Mel, a former football player, managed to reconcile the idea that he enraged a lot of his contestants? Based on what he has said in a new Glamour piece, he has tried to hit the ground running, both with him and the audience.

Mel, first of all, indicated that it was a conversation with a friend that made him realize that he was wrong for saying that he would eliminate any contestant over 60:

“She said, ‘What you said was insensitive, and it’s just not who you are’ … My reference of dating was 39, 40 years old. I hadn’t dated in 26, 27 years. That’s what I told her. She goes, ‘It doesn’t matter. You’ve said some things that are just incredibly wrong.’ And I go, ‘I’ve got to apologize.’

“I’m thinking, to me, the age range was 45 to 60 … That’s my age range. I’m thinking that’s the gold years for me. My reference, again, was when I was dating at 39, 40. I hadn’t dated in 26 years, so I had no clue. And that’s why I said that comment. I didn’t know.”

Mel went on to say that shortly after arriving in the mansion to film his season he apologized to the women and asked for them to give him a chance. Whether or not the process works for him, though, is something that we will not know about until at least the fall. We would more than understand if some prospective contestants even dropped out after hearing his remarks.
