‘America’s Got Talent’ preview: Sword swallowers, opera singers, and more

We are not even going to bother being cynical, because ,we loved the season premiere for “America’s Got Talent” last week. Even though we cannot remember anyone offhand except for the guy who sang the crazy “Booty Song,” it was thoroughly entertaining and just what we want from summer TV: Something that is a complete and total guilty pleasure show that allows you to be mindless while you watch it.

Now, it looks like there will be more of the same tomorrow. We admit now that we’re not really that big on the singers or the dancers in this competition, but we love all the freakshow acts. We’d be great to watch a whole show of people swallowing swords, jumping off of crazy heights, and hanging heavy things off of their body, just because there is nowhere else you can see that (except Venice Beach). Want the next pop star? Go watch one of the three other network shows about it. The only vocal acts we’re game to watch here are opera, hip-hop, or something that doesn’t really get a lot of play on other shows, and we at least know for sure that one of those two things is coming up very soon.

What we do want to see at some point over the next few weeks, though, is someone that could actually change this whole disillusion of “the next big act” being a worthless title. There’s only been one act in Terry Fator that has really managed to have a huge career after this show, and we hope that this will eventually change. We’d love to see a great magician on the show, or a comic that we hear of after the fact.
