‘Mad Men’ season 6, episode 12 spoilers: Jon Hamm on Don Draper’s devastation
Over the years on “Mad Men,” we’ve seen Don Draper go through all sorts of issues when it comes to his infidelity. It’s broken him down, made him appear pathetic, and at times caused his job to fall apart in some ways. However, all of this may pale in comparison to what happens to him now in the wake of his own daughter seeing him having sex with “family friend” Sylvia.
In the video below looking back at Sunday night’s episode, show creator Matthew Weiner explains why this particular scene is going to leave Don emotionally scarred in some ways moving forward. He has excelled over the years when it comes to keeping illusions, whether it be with his fake identity or his affairs. Now, those two worlds are colliding, and there is nothing he can do about whether or not Sally Draper decides to reveal the truth to either his ex-wife Betty or his current wife Megan.
Meanwhile, Jon Hamm also explains how this traumatic moment for Sally will leave Don “devastated” in many ways, and this is going to cause him to unravel moving forward through the final two episodes of season 6. What makes this matter even more shocking is that the sight of sexual behavior of this kind is something that Don has emotional scars from as a child, and he is now passing some of that pain on to his daughter in a very different way.
One thing is for sure: Don’s marriage to Megan is going to have a very hard time surviving this setback, and it will be a miracle if she does not find out about this in the weeks ahead.
