‘Doctor Who’ season 8 spoilers: Matt Smith replacement, 12th Doctor may take time
If you think back to 2010, then you probably remember one thing in regards to the talk about who was going to replace David Tennant as the next “Doctor Who”: The press was wrong approximately a hundred times before the name of “Matt Smith” ever entered the equation. The truth here is that the British press in particular salivates over everything that comes their way, which is what leads to there being so many denials, alterations, and the like.
Take for instance this current war of the headlines. Remember the chatter from earlier today that Rory Kinnear had been offered the role of 12th Doctor? That came via one outlet, and now the Mirror quotes a BBC source who says that the decision could still be a ways off before they offer the role to anyone. Why? Because they are reportedly still in the “early” stages of trying to figure this out.
If you want to know our honest opinion from covering these sorts of things, it’s this: There really is no individual name right now that is a favorite, and the press are just latching onto Kinnaer, reviving an old story from months ago, because a couple of people have talked about him. He was probably at one time considered, but there’s no evidence to really make us believe that he is the guy production really wants, or is interested in. He’s almost the sacrificial lamb to keep the show in the press for a while as the real search continues.
We figure we’ll find out something more concrete in a few weeks’ time, but there’s no immediate rush to find the 12th Doctor tomorrow.
