‘Game of Thrones’ season 3 finale spoilers: Joe Dempsie, George R.R. Martin speak out

GendryJust in case your excitement level for Sunday night’s “Game of Thrones” finale was not high enough (and in which case, we question your sanity), we now have some more news that should get your motor running.

Let’s start with Gendry, a man who has started to come into his own this season thanks to the revelation by Melisandre that he is a major potential threat to Stannis Baratheon to the throne, mostly because he has a blood link as King Robert’s son. Is it safe to say that this is a man who will die? He is certainly in a position to perhaps more so than even Robb Stark was last week.

Then again, isn’t it perhaps possible that the precarious position for Gendry actually makes him more likely to possibly survive? You certainly cannot rule it out, especially based on what Joe Dempsie said about his situation in a Rolling Stone interview:

“Having been thrown in the dungeons by Melisandre while they decide what to do, Melisandre and Stannis essentially have a decision to make about how brutal they want to be. With Gendry, they’ve got what they want out of him, but as long as he’s alive, he’s still a pretty direct threat to Stannis’s campaign, I’d imagine. But it’s a land in which rumors spread quickly and tales of heinous crimes are very speedily passed on throughout the kingdom, so it’s about whether Stannis cares enough about his reputation to keep him alive or to get rid. That’ll be the crux of Gendry. Essentially, Gendry’s found himself in a position which isn’t nice for anyone, which is that he has literally no control. He’s fairly helpless by the end of the series.”

Now, we turn to something that is relatively fun. In the videos below, you can see George R.R. Martin take on the subject of death and his work, saying that whether fans are reading the books or watching the show, he wants them to be afraid of what could be coming up around the bend. He also said that an actress on the show once begged him to not kill off her character, mostly because she loved being such a part of the program that she would hate to leave. (He also shared with him viewer reactions to the Red Wedding.)

Just in case all of this is not enough to have you satisfied just yet, you can see a brand-new photo from the finale (featuring a rather-upset Tywin Lannister) over at the link here.
