2013 CMT Music Awards: Carrie Underwood performs ‘See You Again’ for Oklahoma
We’ve already written about the individual winners for Wednesday night’s CMT Music Awards, but there was one notable performance that is worth talking about with a piece all its own and that is Carrie Underwood’s performance of her new single “See You Again,” which was dedicated to her home state of Oklahoma after the deadly tornadoes that have blown through the area over the past several weeks.
After the initial storms devastated the town of Moore, the former “American Idol” champion donated $1 million to the relief effort, and she has also shared many a message to the state in hopes of lifting spirits. While she performed this song on the show, images of the state played out in the background, and there were very few dry eyes in the house, given the strong connections between country music and the state. As a matter of fact, Blake Shelton just had his “Healing in the Heartland” concert event in Oklahoma City a week ago benefiting the cause.
This show ended up being a pretty big night for Carrie, as she also won Video of the Year for a song called “Blown Away,” which probably did have a little bit of an unfortunately-timed metaphor between an emotional struggle and a tornado taking down everything in its path. Just as it was great to see Carrie pay tribute to Oklahoma, it was also nice to see that sensitivity about the song’s subject matter did not curtail anyone from voting for what was a stellar music video and one of 2012’s best.
