Fall TV preview: ‘The Tomorrow People’ brings ‘Vampire Diaries,’ ‘Arrow’ execs together
It looks like the CW will be trying to establish themselves one heck of a superhero-themed block on Wednesday nights this fall, and we couldn’t be more excited. We already know that “Arrow” is a hit and has a huge audience, so can’t “The Tomorrow People” help to continue that along?
Let’s start here with what clearly works with this show already. It has both Julie Plec of “The Vampire Diaries” and Greg Berlanti of “Arrow” on board, meaning that there is a pedigree of people who know how to make action on The CW work very well. In addition to that, you also have the basic premise that this is a remake of a show from the 1970s about young people who discover that there is a certain something extra to them, and there is a secret community out there of people just like them. It’s a premise that has been done a number of times, whether we look at “The X-Men” or even TV examples that borrowed from the original “Tomorrow People” in USA’s “The 4400” or NBC’s “Heroes.”
Sadly, there is really not much to go on in the trailer below to give us an idea one way or another if “The Tomorrow People” is going to be a hit at all. The special effects at least look pretty decent, and the scheduling department has the right idea.
We do overall like the new shows that The CW picked up this year as they feel on-brand, reasonably interesting, and about concepts that people care about. The only major issue we see this show running into is that most viewers aren’t going to be familiar with the British version, and it does not have a big-time franchise like DC Comics attached.
Tell us: Do you think that “The Tomorrow People” has potential? We want to hear your thoughts below! This article is just one tiny piece of our Fall TV Preview series, and you can read more about this very thing over at the link here.
