ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 3: Shonda Rhimes offers suggestions while you wait

ScandalThis past week, fans of “Scandal” had their first real taste of something that has not been offered before in the show’s run: Going from a 22-episode season with intermittent breaks to a summer of waiting, and knowing that it’s going to be a while before you get to see Olivia Pope grace the small screen again.

So what to do while you wait? Shonda Rhimes posted some suggested programming to check out on her WhoSay page, and we’ll start here with some of that. Her list is a combination of TV and movies, with most of it geared towards the political aspect of the show more than the romance.

1. “The West Wing,” which is an absolutely perfect choice given that there really is no Presidential series quite like it. (Also, you should love it if you love “The Newsroom” over on HBO.

2. “State of Play” – The British series, and not the movie.

3. Any of the “Bourne” movies (we can’t really agree with this choice), which have at least a few similarities on the government conspiracy level to what we’ve seen play out with Huck almost all season long.

As for some of our own suggestions for things to check out, it depends on what you want. Are you looking for a show about complicated politics? “Political Animals” was big for this, though its ratings on USA last summer were unfortunately low. (It does have some of the same sort of bizarre romantic notes to it.) “All the President’s Men” and the more-recent “The Ides of March” are two great films exploring Washington dynamics, while “Homeland” on some level even has some similarities.

We know the wait’s a long one, and there will be times in which your Thursday nights will feel like wastelands during the next two weeks. We feel your pain, we really do.

The good news we have to share here is that “Scandal” will be back with a bang this fall. If you want to read even more news on what you can expect via a certain pair in Quinn and Huck on “Scandal” season 3, just be sure to visit the link here.
