MTV’s ‘Awkward’ season 3, episode 7 review: Jenna the homecoming martyr
There is being sympathetic … and then there is being so sympathetic that you end up ruining yourself in the process. If there is one way that we could best describe the new episode of “Awkward” that aired on MTV Tuesday night, it was this. Jenna Hamilton continued to live vicariously through the lives of single people, trying to make them feel better about being alone and not able to attend the homecoming dance and hurt her own relationship in the process. As someone who has had the single homecoming experience before, we understand. But at the same time, there has to be a way to live your life while also being courteous to those around you.
The only major problem here is that for a show that has typically done a good job at giving a real depiction of high school, having the depressed” girl that was causing Jenna to be so emotional turn out to be a drug dealer was a cop-out. It felt like an excuse to make Jenna’s decision easy, rather than her coming to terms with much of anything.
So while Jenna finally made the decision to get down with Matty (who learned how to “dance” via Jake earlier on in the episode, the other major story this week really revolved around Ming’s attempts to sabotage the whole affair to get back at the Asian mafia. This entire story was weird when we saw it in season 2, but there is something hilarious about having this sort of exaggeration present to the girl that knows everything.
In the end, we had a happy ending to a happy episode … and there was no sighting of that hipster Colin from last week at all.
