‘The Americans’ season 2 spoilers: Annet Mahendru, Alison Wright series regulars
The official cast for FX’s “The Americans” is expanding for the show’s second season. After getting a great deal of critical acclaim for much of the first 13 episodes, the network announced on Tuesday that Annet Mahendru and Alison Wright, who play the characters of Nina and Martha, respectively, are each going to be labeled series regulars on the show moving forward. This is not necessarily a guarantee that they will appear in every episode, but they are going to have a pretty substantial role moving forward.
In a statement, here is what executive producers Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields had to say on the promotion:
“Annet Mahendru has been a revelation as Nina, bringing the character to life with a rich and subtle depth that keeps you guessing as to what’s really percolating under the surface … And Alison Wright’s portrayal of Martha is heartbreakingly real at every turn. We are thrilled to add them to our outstanding company of actors.”
Specifically, Nina is the KGB for Stan, and on the first season she became a pretty powerful mole to him. However, near the end of the season she started to tilt back towards the side of the Russians courtesy of a new promotion. Now, she is doing some intelligence for the Russians yet again.
Meanwhile, Martha ended up marrying “Clark” near the end of the first season, and the two have an interesting relationship: While they are together in a technical sense, there are still a bevy of other excuses that have kept him from moving into her home (or her visiting his home). Considering that Philip and Elizabeth are now seemingly back together (and he will be moving home), keeping Martha away from that life may be more challenging as their relationship grows deeper.
