‘The Voice’ UK review: Moni Tivony, CJ Edwards, and Joseph Apostol close auditions
After weeks of auditions without commercials (a revelation for anyone watching this show from North America), “The Voice” UK finally wrapped up this part of the competition on Saturday. We had a pretty healthy mix of everything that we have seen on the series thus far throughout its run, whether it be completely undiscovered talent, people who have bounced around in the industry for years, and some people who have been through the singing-show circuit for a long time.
While we’ve gotten a sense at times of people who could go far in the competition, we have to say that we’re not altogether sure that there has been a single person thus far that we can really sit here and say that this person has to be a favorite to win.
John Pritchard – The first act of the night was someone with a solid voice, but to be fair we’re also not sure that we are going to completely remember him.
Letitia Grant-Brown – Sometimes, there is a performer who you can almost pair a coach with immediately. That is really what happened here. Letitia was almost tailor-made for Jessie J almost from the get-go, and her voice was clearly enough to get her a team member.
Danny Foster – This guy has been in the industry for a long time, and he sadly continues a tradition of familiar artists coming on the show and getting no love from the coaches. We always just find this situation to be rather embarrassing.
Jay Aston – Really, Jay is in much of the same book as Danny: An accomplished singer who just couldn’t make it on this show for whatever reason.
Moni Tivony – We are enormous Bob Marley fans over here, and so anyone who tries one of his songs has our attention. They are so hard to sing vocally, and then you also have to figure out how to nail the emotion. It’s not an easy challenge, but Moni really managed to pull it off. He got all four coaches to turn around, and Moni ultimately went with will.i.am.
Ali Sampa – It’s the singing dentist! She is actually the singing dentist with Middle Eastern influences, and we’ve never really heard anything quite like this. She has that serious originality vibe going for her, and this could get her pretty far in the competition.
Joseph Apostol – Had will.i.am turned around, Joseph probably would have went with him. Nonetheless, he had a great choice between Jessie and Tom, and now the “She’s a Lady” singer has the final member of his team.
Brent Davison – Another former band member loses out. No surprise here, and the nasty trend continues for a while longer.
Bromwen Lewis – This has to be the most egregious thing that we have seen all season long. Bromwen was absolutely fantastic, soulful, and moving. We loved her in the preview, and this has to be one of the biggest regrets the coaches may have moving forward.
Adam Barron – With Jessie and Will being the only two coaches left, they were being extremely picky. After all, they passed over Bromwen! Jessie waited until the very last second on this soulful singer, but now her lineup is officially complete.
Rob Reynolds – A very different singer than anything we have seen on the night, and after seeing the rapper turn down a whole heap of artists, this was one of his last two chances. Did he bite? Nope!
CJ Edwards – This guy was the last person on the roster, but he joined Will’s team with a fun, energetic performance that included a serenade of Jessie and so much more.
