‘The Amazing Race 22’ review: When the followers become the leaders

The Amazing Race 21 CastOftentimes on “The Amazing Race,” there is a certain aversion to night tasks, with the show even going so far at times as forcing teams to sit around and wait for a while in order for things to open. However, there was a thrill in seeing so much of Sunday night’s leg take place during the night, just as much as we enjoyed a creepy funhouse roadblock, and a detour that actually made teams either build a train or carry around giant letters.

While this leg had a pretty ho-hum conclusion in a non-elimination, we know that there are two lessons that teams can take from this:

1. If you’re in a big city, don’t allow yourself to be lost.

2. Don’t keep working with another team once you could potentially be eliminated thanks to it in the end.

Now, let’s get on to the actual placement of the teams.

1. Max & Katie – We’re actually really warming to these two, mostly because they are at least pretty colorful when it comes to their personalities. Plus, Katie gets about 1,000 points in our book for referencing the classic Nickelodeon game show “Legends of the Hidden Temple.” For one of the first times all season, they really had a leg without any problems in it.

2. Joey & Meghan – We’ve called them a sleeper team for some time, and this is why: even though they have problems from time to time, their overall race strategy is pretty solid: They don’t rely on other teams, and they don’t really get too rattled by bumps in the road. This is why they had a reasonably easy time with what was a pretty cool leg.

3. Caroline & Jennifer – Sometimes, being in teams is a pretty bad idea. Had these two ladies not lucked out be the hockey guys’ failure to pay attention to what they were doing, they could have been in more trouble this leg. However, you have to get lucky sometimes on this show in order to keep going, and they made smart moves from that point on.

4. Bates & Anthony – These two guys hopefully learned a valuable lesson this week: race by yourselves rather than trying to impress the girls! They seemed almost lackadaisical at times, and were content with a footrace to the finish. After wrecking a giant letter in the detour, they seemed done; however, they managed to later beat Mona & Beth in a footrace of its own.

5. Mona & Beth – We feel for the roller derby moms, mostly in that they were pretty much used by another team and defeated because of it. However, they still have no one but themselves to blame here after getting so lost that the hockey guys were able to do almost all of both detours and still pass them.

What did you think about Sunday night’s “Amazing Race” episode, and do you think that Mona & Beth’s goose is cooked? If you want to see where we ranked the teams prior to this episode, you can do so over at the link here.
