‘The Newsroom’ season 2 lands July premiere date for HBO

The NewsroomAre you ready to re-enter the world of Atlantis Cable News? HBO has finally unveiled the official premiere date for season 2 of “The Newsroom,” with the biggest surprise being that the series is not going to be back this year until July.

Specifically, the premiere date for the Jeff Daniels drama is going to be Sunday, July 14 at 10:00 p.m. Eastern time, which is a year and a few weeks past where the show kicked off its first ten-episode season back in June 2012. There are some new cast members on the show this year, as well as some new stories surrounding the Presidential election, the economy, and other key plots from the vantage point of how a network tries to cover them while remaining both engaging and educational to viewers.

There are a number of ways you can interpret the later start from the show, including the Aaron Sorkin and company wanted time to improve on what was a polarizing and at times preachy first season (though we also did praise it as our favorite new program of 2012). Personally, we see it as a move by HBO to ensure that they have new programming airing constantly around the clock leading up to the holiday season. In starting this series later, there will be less of a waiting period between “The Newsroom” and “Boardwalk Empire” season 4 in the fall. Of course, the negative here is that the premium cable network runs the risk of colliding with the final five episodes of “Breaking Bad,” which began airing last year in July.
