Ratings: NBC’s ‘The Voice’ improves vs. NCAA; ‘Dancing with the Stars 16’ down

The VoiceRegardless of what you may think about “The Voice,” it’s hard to dispute the ratings punch that comes via some of its blind auditions. While we frequently have an opportunity to see some other shows slowly lose their audience from one week to the next (see “American Idol” for more on that), NBC’s singing competition is bucking the trend when it comes to the 18-49 demographic.

Overall, “The Voice” was the top program of the night not including the NCAA Tournament, as its 4.9 rating is at least two tenths up from where it was at this point last week. This number if sure to only keep rising when the final numbers are released a little later in the day, as “The Voice” has become a little bit routine to this sort of thing. This in turn helped “Revolution” rise slightly to a 2.3, though it is also likely that this could be adjusted down given that “The Voice” often runs over its allotted time by a minute or two.

What is a little bit more of a surprise is the dying state of “Dancing with the Stars.” What happened to this show? At one time, it was a beast that was drawing well over 20 million viewers a night; it seems as though it is “The Voice” that has brought it all the way down to a 2.0 rating and under 13 million viewers, and that forces us to ask one question: will ABC decide from here on out to air the show on a different night? You know something is off when the results shows on Tuesday regularly bring in better ratings than the performance shows do.

Meanwhile, it is also worth noting that the season finale of “The Carrie Diaries” drew a 0.4. This is not great by any stretch of the imagination, but you also have to remember a very important detail at the same time: this show apparently does stream well online and on Hulu, and this is causing The CW to consider giving it another season.
