‘Mad Men’ season 6 premiere spoilers: Jon Hamm on Megan, Don Draper

So what really is going to happen between Don and Megan Draper on “Mad Men” this season? If there ever was a million-dollar question when it comes to this series right now, this has to be it. After all, we saw the two of them during the finale move in slightly different directions, and it showed how the two, despite being arguably much closer than Don was with Betty during their marriage, are not on the same page.

For Don, Megan’s acting dreams were probably never something he took particularly seriously, and he had an idea of what a wife is and should be to him. How is he going to handle the fact that she now has found some level of success, and she is also under the false notion that everything is okay and the two are going to be completely happy moving forward?

It’s fair to say that the sudden independence of Megan is something that our lead is not going to know how quite to handle, which is what led Jon Hamm to say the following in teasing the new season to Entertainment Weekly:

“I think he wanted her to be independent on his terms which obviously is no independence at all … You love them until the first time they say ‘no.’ And then where are you?”

The deconstruction of marriage could be a central theme to this new season, especially since there is one thing that many are agreeing on at the moment when it comes to Don and Megan’s relationship: based on all of the evidence that we are seeing right now, the odds of it working out for them are slim. It can happen, but it forces Don into a greater sea change of thinking than he has probably ever had.
