‘Justified’ season 4 finale review: Boyd Crowder’s darkness in the sky

JustifiedWatching a season finale of “Justified” is most of the time akin to riding on a train speeding down railroad tracks: sometimes, it gets there fine without a problem, and you can breathe a sigh of relief; other times, it crashes along the way and tragedy strikes. The show’s never had a bad finale, but some are clearly more emotional than others.

When it comes to Tuesday night’s new episode, it was unfortunately more bad than good for some of our main characters. (Warning: MASSIVE spoilers ahead.)

Going into this episode, it was an understatement to say that we were concerned as to whether or not Ava was going to survive. Did she? Yes, but that does not exactly mean that she got out of this a free woman. Instead, she had to pay the piper for the murder of Delroy, and found herself arrested by the end of the episode with Boyd left to fend for himself.

The one person we really have to praise here more than anyone else is Walton Goggins, who really knocked this one out of the park with a gut-wrenching performance. Boyd is not a good man in many ways, but your heart still breaks for him. That’s not an easy thing to pull off, but this is a man that has really lost everything that he holds dear. The only positive he can really think about is that at least Ava is still alive.

As for Raylan, the good news is that the Drew Thompson case seems to be resolved, and he has rid himself of problems with the Detroit mob. For a time, it seemed like both Winona and his unborn child would be in trouble, but they each also found a way to survive the hour and can move forward into a new season that will hopefully feature a birth.
