‘New Girl’ season 2, episode 20 review: The strangest funeral ever

New GirlDuring Tuesday night’s new episode of “New Girl,” we probably got an opportunity to see just how much Jess really cares about Nick. Tragic times are when your true friends really do come out, and she was certainly there for him while he was simultaneously trying to lay his father to rest in Chicago.

This was a strange episode in many ways, largely because we were having to meet pretty much Nick’s entire family over the course of just under half an hour, including the incredible Margo Martindale in the role of his mother. All of these people still still ultimately have one thing in common: they completely depended on Nick to do everything, which is pretty ironic given that he is the least responsible member of the gang as it is. The whole family situation was really rather sad in that it perfectly explains where the guy comes from: he has no real role models in his family, and so many of them were used to getting him mired in their own problems.

It was largely due to this that Nick started to really struggle with the idea of holding a funeral at all, and it took him being saved by Jess in order to pull it off. Schmidt was too afraid with the idea of death to be of any use, and Winston was trying to just take care of him. All in all, she was a miracle worker to a group of people who didn’t even accept her very much at first … and she even went as far as to dress up as Elvis.

the ultimate takeaway from this is simple: to Nick, Jess has to be a keeper, even if it doesn’t happen right away. This episode was probably more important for the two of them at the end of the day than the ones where the two kiss.
