FX renews ‘The Americans’ for season 2
You have to love what FX has going on for itself at the moment; not only has John Landgraf set up a pretty great relationship between the network and showrunners (as evidenced by how loyal such folks as Graham Yost and Kurt Sutter have been over the years), but they also have done a rather brilliant job of promoting their shows, and giving them plenty of opportunities to succeed.
The latest example of that? Check out the fact that the network has already renewed “The Americans” for a second season, despite it being just four episodes into its run. The show has drawn solid but not spectacular numbers compared to some of their other series (in particular “Sons of Anarchy”), and Landgraf cited the show’s quality in a statement explaining just why the network chose to make the move.
“The Americans has quickly established itself as a key part FX’s acclaimed drama line-up … Executive producers Joe Weisberg, Joel Fields and Graham Yost and their collaborators are telling riveting and deeply emotional stories and the performances of Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys, Noah Emmerich and the entire cast are simply outstanding. The show is truly worthy of its widespread critical acclaim and we are confident that its quality will continue to yield a robust and passionate audience.”
The fact that “The Americans” gets another season is yet another brilliant example of the cable model working: fans of the show no longer have to worry about cancellation rumors (not that they really were here), and with the 13-episode length being relatively short, it is possible that some new fans will discover the series over the course of its hiatus and tune in when it returns in 2014.
