‘Supernatural’ season 9, Vampire Diaries’ season 5 official; The CW renews both
Big news coming in now from the world of The CW: they are not making us wait to find out the future of many of their most-popular series.
On Monday, it was announced that “Supernatural,” “The Vampire Diaries,” and “Arrow” were each renewed for what will be their ninth, fifth, and second seasons, respectively. These are the only three shows for the network to draw a 1.0 rating this season, and all three were expected to be back weeks ago.
Of the three shows, “Supernatural” was the only one that had a future that was ever in any sort of doubt, mostly because series stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles each had to agree to return for more action. This series was the biggest success story arguably of the year, as it has increased its ratings on Wednesday nights following the expected success of the new Green Arrow-inspired thriller.
As for how long “Arrow” and “The Vampire Diaries” could last, the principal casts of each show are expected to be around until at least a season 6 so long as the network wants them for this long. At this point, it may be more difficult to keep the actors on either show on board given that Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev, and even “Arrow” star Stephen Amell are seeing their names rise as noteworthy stars. (This is why “Gossip Girl” would have ended with season 6 even if the show had better ratings: Blake Lively was ready to go do movies and other projects.) At this point, we don’t believe that anyone on these shows is really looking to leave … but we’ll have more information on that when the time comes.
Network executive Mark Pedowitz had the following to say in a statement:
“We said last year that one of our goals was to establish building blocks to grow on, and now with our new hit Arrow and fan favorite Supernatural on Wednesday night, and the continued success of The Vampire Diaries on Thursday, we’ve been able to do that … Not only do Arrow, Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries perform well on-air, they’re also extremely successful for us both digitally and socially. I’m thrilled to have all three shows returning to our schedule next season.”
