2013 PGA Awards: ‘Modern Family,’ ‘Amazing Race,’ ‘Colbert Report’ among winners
The Producers Guild of America is a pretty esteemed organization; however, we wish that they had been at least a little bit more creative when it came to picking their television nominees and their winners this year.
With one key exception, pretty much every show that came out victorious for the union’s annual awards has won at least a decent percentage of awards elsewhere, and for some of them, it makes us wonder just how many voters even watched the shows nominated to begin with.
The winners
David L. Wolper Award for Outstanding Producer of Long-Form Television – “Game Change” (HBO)
Surprised? Don’t be. This look at the 2008 Presidential election has won almost every miniseries / TV category it has been nominated for over the past year. It almost feels at this point like it aired years ago.
Norman Felton Award for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television, Drama – “Homeland” (Showtime)
Nicholas Brody could have killed Walden, screamed that he was in the room, and then did the Dougie from one end to the other, and “Homeland” still won have won the award here. That’s the kind of momentum the show has right now.
Danny Thomas Award for Award for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television, Comedy – “Modern Family” (ABC)
For us, the biggest surprise here is that “Girls,” which won the Golden Globe, was not even nominated here whereas dinosaurs like “Curb Your Enthusiasm” were. We would have picked “The Big Bang Theory” out of the shows nominated, but this is a strong, albeit predictable, choice.
Award for Outstanding Producer of Live and Talk Television – “The Colbert Report” (Comedy Central)
A welcome change, and the only surprise of the night. Colbert almost always loses out to Jon Stewart, even though his show has by and large been the more daring, roll-on-the-floor funny half-hour of the two for over a year now.
Award for Outstanding Producer of Competition Television – “The Amazing Race” (CBS)
We understand this is a boring win, but you can’t argue that from a production standpoint, there is no show that works so hard and pulls off quite what “The Amazing Race” does. This is a massive undertaking, and we have no problem with it winning here every year.
