‘Oprah’s Next Chapter’: David Letterman reveals true feelings on Jay Leno
We’re not always as interested in the guests on “Oprah’s Next Chapter” from a celebrity standpoint as we are with the show coming up on January 6, and really, it is because most of the likes of Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber have done so many other interviews over the years that it hardly feels special.
However, the chat featuring Oprah Winfrey and David Letterman is proving itself to be supremely fascinating. For one, this is Dave and Oprah, two people who have become notorious over the years for headlines about a “feud” that was never really as big of a deal as it was made out to be. The fact that Letterman hardly does interviews (let alone with someone like Oprah) makes it all the more exciting.
Now, let’s add the icing on the cake: that Oprah actually gets Dave to reveal his true feelings about Jay Leno, who NBC famously (and controversially) picked over him for “The Tonight Show” job after the retirement of Johnny Carson. This was the move that led to Letterman moving to CBS, where he has been in a dead-heat competition with Leno for ratings ever since.
What may surprise many is that Letterman starts out his description of Jay with a compliment, before going on to the real reason the two are not anywhere close to buddies with each other:
“We were always friends before all of this happened. He has a way … He’s an unusual fellow. I’ve never met anyone quite like Jay … I think he’s the funniest guy I’ve ever known. Therefore, the fact that he is also maybe the most insecure person I have ever known. I could never reconcile that.”
The only time Letterman and Leno have worked together over the past several years was a Super Bowl commercial for “The Late Show” that also featured a cameo by Oprah, and it was shot under a veil of secrecy.
