‘Jersey Shore’ season 6 falls completely off the map
It’s interesting that at this time a year and a half ago, we could do nothing but talk about how “Jersey Shore” was turning the world of cable TV upside down with its massive ratings; now, we can barely even remember the show is off the air during a season that is so disappointing entertainment-wise that it has made our list of the Biggest Disappointments of the Year.
So just how bad of a situation are The Sitaution’s ratings at this point? Ultimately, it’s about perspective. For most cable shows, a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic along with 2.2 million viewers would be solid for a new episode. However, what makes the total for Thursday night’s new episode shocking is what happens when you put it into perspective with wages. For season 6, all of the castmates put together earned around $1 million an episode, which is an enormous number for a reality TV show of this variety. In other words, the cast is getting paid almost fifty cents for every viewer MTV pulls in.
As much as this season has felt dull, we hope that the show somehow still manages to pull it together for an epic goodbye that should tribute the greatness that “Jersey Shore” once was. Was it ever worthy of an Emmy? No, but it was great entertainment that so long as you didn’t take any of it seriously, would would sure to smile at from time to time.
Are you surprised by just to what extent the mighty have fallen, and what do you think is the bigger cause for the decline at this point: viewer fatigue, lack of interest, the dull season, or all of the competition on in the fall?
