‘Parks and Recreation’ season 5 spoilers: Newt Gingrich scores cameo role
First, it was Senator John McCain; then, it was Vice-President Joe Biden. So who’s the next political figure stopping by “Parks and Recreation” season 5? In this case, it just so happens to be a recent Presidential candidate who does not even seem to be in Washington DC.
In a new post on his Twitter account, Rob Lowe confirmed that this appearance was actually a little bit different than some of the show’s other recent cameos. Why? Rather than actually planning out some sort of cameo appearance in advance, it actually seems as though the writers just plugged this one in spur-of-the-moment in order to grab headlines:
“Latest surprise drop by on set: Speaker Newt Gingrich! So we made up a scene and put him in!! #AllHappeningInIndy“
While you may disagree with the politics of some or all of the cameos on this show so far, they have all been at least good sports in coming on the show and interacting with the likes of Leslie and Ben. We also should point out that given the show’s recent series-low rating on Thursday night (a meager 1.4), “Parks and Recreation” really needs as much help as it can to draw in viewers whether they be conservative, liberal, or just looking for a laugh. Gingrich certainly had people voting for him earlier this year, and if those people all tune in, it could guarantee us a little bit more Pawnee in the future.
Gingrich has yet to speak out about the guest spot publicly.
What do you think about this new addition to the show, and do you like “Parks and Recreation” bringing in so many politically-oriented guest stars given the content of the show? If you want to see some more scoop pertaining to what Rob Lowe is up to next, you can check it out over at the link here.

I met Newt today at the filming in Indianapolis. I talked to him for a few minutes, and I met several members of the cast and crew of the show too. Apparently Newt was in town to talk to Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels. His driver suggested Newt eat at St. Elmo’s Steakhouse downtown. When he got there, the restaurant was closed because Parks & Rec was filming, but they worked him into the script.
That’s the story I consistently got from everyone on the street, anyway. It was a lot of fun to meet everyone.
