‘The Carrie Diaries’: New Carrie poster, will series stay true to her history?
Fans of the “Sex and the City” series haven’t had anything new to connect with since the series ended (“Girls” tried their best to copy the show and fill that void – it’s just not the same), but now Candice Bushnell’s “The Carrie Diaries” is getting ready to launch on the CW (Monday, January 14th), so that should make “Sex and the City fans happy… right?
While the CW is putting a lot of stock in “The Carrie Diaries” bringing in that “Sex and the City” crowd and is marketing towards them by saying this show is the prequel to the show everyone loved so much, when you dig deeper into the plot of the show fans will quickly realize that here are some major holes in Carrie’s background that don’t add up to what has already been established with her character.
For example, in “Sex and the City” Carrie hasn’t seen her father since she was very little, but in the Carrie Diaries she is raised only by her father (her mother is deceased) and actually has a little sister (in the novel 3 little sisters) who are never mentioned in the HBO series, expect to Alexander Petrovsky as a ruse after she embarrasses herself on the phone with him. While we don’t learn a lot about Carrie’s family in “Sex and the City” we do learn that who ever her family is, she does not have any kind of close relationship with them as they have barely been mentioned through the six seasons of the show.
So if the CW is hoping to bring in the original “Sex and the City” fans, they made be disappointed in the numbers that will actually stick around after the premiere since fans are deeply involved with the character of Carrie and know her inside and out, but if they are hoping to bring in a new generation that hasn’t watched the original series they might have a a good chance at building an audience for the show, especially with AnnaSophia Robb in the lead (she’s fantastic)
