‘Sesame Street’: Voice of Elmo Kevin Clash resigns after new abuse allegations
Sometimes when there is smoke, there is fire; and while there are no embers burning just yet when it comes to “Sesame Street’s” famed voice of Elmo Kevin Clash, new allegations of sexual abuse against a minor are enough for his future from the long-running children’s series to be extinguished.
Only mere hours after a new report came in from TMZ claiming that there was a new named Cecil Singleton who was filing a $5 million suit against the puppeteer, Clash has decided to resign from his post. Singleton claims that the two met on a gay phone chat line back in 1993 when he was fifteen years old, and that the two had a relationship that extended to the point where Clash would buy him dinners and present him with gifts in order to gain his trust. The accuser says that he is only coming forward now because he is only starting to realize the emotional damage done so many years ago … though this is the one part of this story that is a little suspicious given that Clash just settled with his previous accuser for six figures.
Regardless of whether or not these allegations are true, Sesame Workshop announced Clash’s resignation with the following statement:
Clash has yet to comment on the validity of Singleton’s claims, and regardless this has to be an embarrassing and devastating blow for a children’s television program that prides itself on teaching and entertaining very young children. Luckily there is no evidence of any wrongdoing on their part, though there are still conservative parents out there who may not be too interested in getting their children to watch based on the situation.
Do you think that “Sesame Street” will survive this latest claim?
