‘American Idol’ notes: Nicki Minaj, Phillip Phillips, Casey Abrams

It’s a little bit of a quiet time at the moment in the “American Idol” world, but that isn’t keeping us from sharing what little bit is out there when it comes to the show. We are going to be kicking things off here courtesy of the reigning champ Phillip Phillips, but we also have some news to share when it comes to current judge Nicki Minaj and even a funny video with Casey Abrams.

Phillip Phillips at the AMAs – In case you were looking for a reason to watch the American Music Awards this weekend, Phillip will be around the show as a presenter. This is one of the first major music events he has went to since winning season 11, and it makes sense considering the smash success of “Home,” which peaked recently at #2 on the Hot AC chart earlier this week. (Thanks to a dropoff in spins, it looks less likely it will reach the pinnacle now.) The good news is that Phillip is still gaining on the Top 40 chart, and just surged up into the top 15 for the first time. “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest, Ne-Yo, and the Neon Trees are just some of the other people set to present on music’s big night.

The latest promo – Nicki Minaj is the runaway star of the new promo for season 12 of the show. There is no drama with Mariah Carey featured, and it’s really all about the contestants and how she interacts with them. The best part of this? How much emphasis the promo places on the world “honest.”

After watching “The X Factor,” we almost like it better that the judges aren’t working with the contestants, mostly because we are sick of the in-fighting that goes on there and the disillusion that the mentors are really around the contestants seven days a week.

Finally … For a good laugh, watch the awkward Casey Abrams cameo in the video below, which is really all about Jimmy’s people going up on the street and asking them if they are stupid. What was Casey’s answer? Considering the kind of guy he is, it was both wonderfully insightful as well as ironic, given that he got his start really on a television show.
