‘Game of Thrones’ season 3 spoilers: More details from Iceland set

“Game of Thrones” season 3 is finally set to start filming in Iceland, and the next few weeks should be exciting as we start to find out some more details about the set, the scenes being shot, and whether or not these people are going to freeze in the northern part of the island country.

According to Reykjavik Travel (who is smartly talking about production as a way to boost tourism to the country) via Winter is Coming, there are roughly going to be the same amount of crew members in the country in 270 as there were last season. In addition to that, a good 70 of these people (or almost a third) will be native to the country. There has also already been some talk about “Game of Thrones” returning here for season 4, which means for those of you who have yet to open the books that there is still plenty of life Beyond the Wall for these characters yet.

Most of the filming will take place around Lake Mývatn, and it was apparently done this way in order for production to get a little bit more snow (and we’re not talking about the always covered-up Jon Snow) in some of the shots given the remote location of where these characters are going. For those of you who are map geeks, we found it useful to share some photos from Google Maps about just where this is particularly located. At first glance, this lake does seem somewhat remote given that it could not be further away from the capital city, which is the core transport hub for the country.

However, upon closer inspection this lake may actually be a bit more accessible than you would think. There are roads almost completely surrounding it, in addition to a few small towns here and there that could at least provide some sort of immediate lodging to lessen the travel time. Is this a substitute for Reykjavik by any means? Probably not, but the show will at least feel organic in such a place.
