‘The Vampire Diaries’ review: [Spoiler] is dead, and someone’s seeing red
After a few episodes of “The Vampire Diaries” season 4 that made the show appear as though it was stuck in first gear, Thursday night was pretty much the equivalent of getting a shot of adrenaline straight into your face. There was so much going on, and while not all of it made sense, it was thoroughly entertaining.
Let’s start with the biggest problem with this episode: why all of the secrets? From a purely logical perspective, it seems to make far more sense for Damon and Stefan (who made up at the end of the episode after a great deal of fighting) to just tell Elena what is going on with this cure rather than try to keep it hidden from her until they find it. As a matter of fact, this is a problem that many shows catered for younger audiences have: the characters make it far more difficult on themselves than they need to be.
As a matter of fact, the Salvatores making the decision to not spill the beans may have led to the episode’s biggest shocker: the death of someone in Connor who was long considered to be the Big Bad for the season. Now that he is dead, where does the show really go from here? The only real place we can think of is that Jeremy, despite whether or not he wants to, could end up taking his place. Not only can he see Connor’s magic ink, but some of it managed to magically appear on his own hand just as this episode was coming to a close.
Both Bonnie and Caroline had stories this week, but they each really did not seem to be going anywhere fast as our witch started to get some of her powers back with the help of Professor Shane, and Caroline had to deal with some jealousy issues over Tyler’s new pal Hayley … who he had decided to keep secret for some reason that makes him look incredibly suspicious. Tyler is taking it upon himself to be the Dr. Drew for hybrids, since he now knows how to break the sire bond and can help others to do the same thing so long as Klaus does not sniff around and ruin it for him.
The final shocker of the episode was a big one: not only does someone know Elena’s secret about killing Connor, they’ve chose to spell it out for her in her bathroom … in blood. What a great image to end this episode with, and it makes us feel that this show is really starting to get some of its mojo going even without much Klaus and no Rebekah this week.
What did you think about this episode overall?
