‘Game of Thrones’ season 3 spoilers: Coldplay drummer Will Champion cast as…
“Game of Thrones” season 3 is definitely getting a musical touch these days. We have already posted about Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody landing a cameo appearance in an upcoming episode of the HBO fantasy epic, and now, the latest guest star is coming to us from the British rock group Coldplay.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the band’s drummer Will Champion will play (go figure) a drummer during one of the upcoming episodes for the show. While this casting is certainly great from a novelty standpoint, it also fulfills another purpose in ensuring that the producers have someone for the part who genuinely knows how to drum. (Isn’t that always nice?) Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have been all about clever casting on the show, in between getting real-life sword instructors to play such characters and working to the strengths of the actors already in the cast.
While there are surely some out there worried that these “celebrity” appearances hurt the authenticity of the show to a certain degree, we are personally a tad more skeptical on this given that Champion and Lightbody are not going to be playing major roles. Plus, it’s hardly like this sort of Easter-egg casting is new to a production. Just look at Peter Jackson putting himself into “The Lord of the Rings,” or Stephen Colbert possibly appearing now in “The Hobbit.”
“Game of Thrones” season 3 (and not to mention more signs of winter in Westeros) will be here on March 31 at 9:00 p..m. Eastern time, and the series is getting closer and closer to wrapping up production. The only country left to shoot is Iceland, which they will be doing beginning this week.
What do you think about this casting?
