The Blacklist season 7: What more will we learn about Ilya?

The good news at present for Ilya is rather simple: He’s alive. Katarina didn’t kill him, and nor did he tell her everything that he knows about Reddington’s identity! The secret is preserved! Yet, there is other information that is out there — Liz Keen now knows that Reddington is not Ilya. Instead, she knows that he is the man who she previously met as Frank. This is going to create presumably some problems, and those could be explored over time.
Also, there are other things to wonder about, including this — how close are Ilya and Reddington, really? Why would Ilya choose him over someone he seemingly loved? That is something that executive producer John Eisendrath addressed in a new interview with TV Guide:
At some point we will fill in the gaps between what Dom told Liz last year about Ilya, and what we’ve learned about Ilya this year. Whether we do that toward the end of next year or not is unclear yet.
The importance of this statement in particular is that it signals some uncertainty about whether or not this could be the final season — after all, that dictates heavily when they can include certain stories. We do think understanding the Ilya – Reddington relationship is important to everything. After all, it may give more clues as to Reddington’s identity, and also allow us to figure out why he got out of the spy business (seemingly) and took on another identity as the Stranger, Frank, or whatever else you want to call him. Was it the incident at Belgrade, or something else? All options are on the table.
