There is a good bit to be excited about when it comes to the two-hour Criminal Minds season 15 premiere, but seeing Jane Lynch back has to be on the list. After all, think in terms of all of the reasons why! Through the years, Diana Reid has been a big part of Spencer’s story, and also a component of his struggle. She’s been there for him, even though she’s also struggled with Alzheimer’s and maintaining her memories of him.
We know that entering the new season, Spencer is in need of some greater love and comfort in his life. It’s hard for him not to be when you consider the circumstances. His longtime friend JJ just told him that she’s “always loved” him, and he may be conflicted as to what that means or what to do. Also, there’s the day-to-day struggle that goes along with this job.

If you look above, you can check out a first look at the appearance from Jane Lynch as Reid’s mother from the second hour of the aforementioned premiere event. We know that she and Spencer will be spending time together within a rare moment of lucidity for her, and this will allow her an opportunity in order to better understand what’s going on with her son.
While it’s not clear as of yet if this will be the final appearance from Lynch on Criminal Minds, what we do know is this: It’s going to bring forward an opportunity for further closure on this relationship. Both Lynch and Matthew Gray Gubler are fantastic in scenes that they share together, and maybe this particular one will allow them the opportunity to reflect and also solidify more of the bond that they have. Maybe this will also help to propel Spencer towards whatever is next.
