Supergirl season 5 spoilers: Thomas Lennon to play new Mr. Mxyzptlk

SupergirlThere’s a recasting-of-sorts happening within the world of Supergirl season 5, and this time it’s referring to one of the zaniest of characters in Mr. Mxyzptlk. In a lot of ways, it’s shocking that we even saw this character on the show in the first place, let alone that we’re getting to see them on more than one occasion.

Here’s what we know for the time being. According to a new report over at Deadline, Thomas Lennon of The Odd Couple, Reno 911, Lethal Weapon, and plenty of other great things is going to be stepping in as the new version of the character in the new year. This follows up on Peter Gadiot, who played the part previously. Given that this is a character with shape-shifting abilities, the recast here is not all that big of a deal given that he can move from one form into the next.

As for what sort of trouble Mxyzptlk could get himself into this time around, the only response that we can offer is to say that the possibilities are more or less endless! There are all sorts of crazy, imaginative things that the team could be throwing out there with him, and on the other side of the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event, we would also hope that the writers would choose to carve out a story that is a little bit lighter in tone at the same exact time. This could be a nice little refresher, at least before there is some inevitable craziness that is coming at some point before the end of the season. We know that the stakes are going to raise once more — Supergirl wouldn’t be the show that it is otherwise!

Alas, all superhero-related stuff on The CW is over for the time being — you’ll have a better chance to see what’s next within the big crossover when it comes back in January. Supergirl the show will come back after the fact.
