Call the Midwife 2019 Christmas Special photo: Carols are coming!

Call the Midwife

There are a number of things we of course expect from all Christmas Specials, and carols are high up on the list! How can it not be? It’s a part of the holiday tradition, and it is one of those things that everyone can relate to on some level. After all, doesn’t it trace back to a collective memory or two that a lot of us have?

Given how much effort Call the Midwife puts into crafting the perfect holiday specials, we’re certainly not surprised that carols are a big part of its upcoming narrative. How can they not be when you think about it? You’re bringing beloved characters to the forefront and then allowing them to partake in some merriment.

Of course, even something like getting your cast to sing Christmas carols is a lot of work — there’s the singing element, but then also the part of it that requires you to know your placement, be in tune, and then also find a way in order to be in character. In a post on Facebook (see below), the show discusses what it was like for the cast to put a piece like this together, rehearsing between takes and in a limited period of time. It’s going to create a beautiful moment of harmony on the special, and we have a feeling that the entire Call the Midwife cast and crew is aware of just how important some of these moments are for viewers. They recognize that they are powerful and meaningful to the majority of viewers that are out there.

Hopefully, this special will delight you when it airs on BBC/PBS come December 25 — there will be some time spent out of Nonnatus House, but also the Outer Hebrides, some isolated islands in Scotland that are going to need the help of the midwives and nurses alike. It’s a path for them to be able to live even better, stronger lives.
