This Is Us season 4 spoilers: Sterling K. Brown on Randall’s future

This Is Us season 4 is going to be returning to NBC in the new year, and there are a lot of things that are going to need to be resolved. One of the biggest ones is the journey of Rebecca as she handles her newly-discovered memory loss, but there’s a huge part that Randall plays in this story, as well. He’s the only one of the Big Three that knows what is going on with her, and we know that eventually, he and Kevin are going to stop speaking for a time. We know that it doesn’t last forever, but it is still a heartbreaking chapter in the show’s life. It’s not the sort of series that can change its future; the discord is coming. The only thing to ponder is how things fall apart. (It feels like Randall keeping his mother’s secret would be the source of the tension, but there is no confirmation on that subject yet.)

For the time being, Sterling K. Brown isn’t handing over all of the story coming up in the new year — yet, he gives Entertainment Weekly (and us) reasons to feel hopeful that the family, no matter what, will find a way to come back together:

There’s discomfort. Rebecca’s cognition and the state of the matriarch of this family is going to be something that’s tough to watch for most people and how they come to terms with it, accept it, how they move forward with it. It’s uncomfortable to watch someone that you love start to fail themselves. Their body, their brains starting to fail themselves is something tough to watch. But what I love is that this family never forsakes: They show up for each other, and you find a way to move forward together. That’s something that most families can relate to and will find hope in, that you come together. Even when you fracture — and you may fracture for a period of time — you ultimately, at the end of the day, come back together.

Aside from his mother, Randall has other issues that he needs to attend to — think in terms of his job, plus also Deja’s relationship with Malik. That is something that is still being explored at the moment, and there is no clear indicator as to when we’ll be moving forward from that.
