Call the Midwife 2019 Christmas Special: Life back in Poplar

Call the Midwife season 8

There are a few things that we’ve come to learn already about the Call the Midwife 2019 Christmas Special, including that it is heading out of Poplar. If you didn’t know already, you’ll be seeing some characters heading out of Poplar and over to the Outer Hebrides, Scottish Islands that don’t necessarily have the same resources or medical care that you see elsewhere. They’re far more rural, and you’ll see some of the midwives doing their best in order to help people in need there. After all, isn’t giving what the holiday spirit is all about?

Well, in the video below, you can also get a larger sense of what it was like shooting said special from some of the cast — including those who were a part of the Poplar storylines! That is still going to be a part of the show, after all — Nonnatus House makes the show precisely what it is.

There’s another odd part of filming the Christmas Special that is referenced here, and that is of course the fact that it’s being filmed far earlier in the year, often in very un-Christmassy conditions. It was rather warm when certain scenes were being filmed! Yet, isn’t this a big part of the challenge of acting? You have to tap into some of the holiday spirit, even if you are filming the special many months removed from the holiday itself.

The Call the Midwife Christmas Special will air on BBC One and PBS come Christmas Day. Meanwhile, there are more new episodes coming for the series proper — they’ll kick off in the winter in Britain, and are a little bit later this spring here in America. We expect some more twists and turns but, in general, more of what we know this series for: Stories that tug at the heartstrings in a rather significant way.
