The Voice season 17: Is Katie Kadan the odds-on favorite?

The Voice season 17

As we approach Monday’s The Voice episode, we recognize that we’re nearing the key part of the competition. Favorites will separate themselves further, and we’re going to have a chance to bear witness to any vote shockers. That’ll especially be the case right before the finale when the semi-annual The Voice Red Wedding happens and more than half the competition will be cut.

At this point, it feels like there’s a consensus favorite among at least many within the Voice media, and understandably so — Katie Kadan. Her voice is booming, her style unique, and her understanding of music impeccable. She feels like one of those artists who could put out music tomorrow and it’d be fantastic to listen to. This is not someone who started in the industry yesterday. She knows herself and the qualities that work in her voice. She’s also got an excellent mentor in John Legend.

Yet, as talented as we think Katie is, we don’t think that this is a situation where we can just write her in as a champion right now. We’ve been there before at this point in some other seasons — take, for example, when Jordan Smith or Sawyer Fredericks won. With Cassadee Pope, the momentum was also building at this particular point.

So who could take Katie down? We’ve got a couple of contenders in mind.

Jake Hoot – For starters, he’s a male country and they always do well. Also, members of Kelly Clarkson’s team have won before, and given that there isn’t as much pure country at this point as we’ve seen in the past, he may get a pretty hefty share of the country vote. It’s hard to imagine a situation where he ends up getting eliminated before the top 4.

Ricky Duran – He’s got all of the makings of someone who could win the show and surprise a lot of people. He’s extremely talented, picks good songs for himself, and understands who he is as a performer. He doesn’t get the headlines Katie does, but he’s coming off of a great performance and he also has Blake as a coach. Never underestimate the Sheldon effect on a show like this.
