Tonight marked the finale of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and, given the show’s history of ending seasons strong, we had huge expectations. Maybe there would be some sort of headline-making segment to close out the show.
Of course, the bar is set even higher after what Oliver did to Bob Murray on last week’s episode.
At the start of the show tonight, Oliver kicked off another edition of Stupid Watergate II, an opportunity to break down the current impeachment proceedings. While there may not be a favorable result to this for some, the host argued that it is necessary to try and “hold him to account.” It’s the way to ensure that there are not future potential abuses of power.
After a highlight reel of Al Roker giving a kiss of death to a lot of shows at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, we then moved into the main segment for the night: The Census. It is a vital part of the American institution, and it’s something that could be useful for a number of different reasons. Yet, it’s also something that a small portion of the country takes seriously. There were some funny moments in here, including all sorts of finger-pointing about who is really in charge of the census and who wants to bear responsibility for it.
The return of Chiijohn
We were wondering if the finale was going to conclude with bringing back Oliver’s version of Chiitan, the famous otter who found themselves in trouble with Twitter earlier this year.
With that in mind, Oliver ended the show tonight by bringing back Chiijohn for a wholesome segment that would give everyone some lighthearted fun. Chiijohn and his new Susaki mascot friend traveled to New York to cheer up the real John Oliver, and through their travels they saw some art, met Seth Meyers, and also saw the ocean. In the end, they did reunite with the real John Oliver.
There really wasn’t any sort of huge joke here — it was just simple and hopeful for the future. Consider it an atypical end to this show, but one that did make us smile.
