Through two episodes of season 1 already, one of the things that we’ve come to know is that His Dark Materials is doing everything that it can in order to match the ambition of the book series … if that is at all possible. They’ve delivered a number of powerful narratives so far and we can only hope that this tradition lasts. The first two episodes brought us the world of the Magisterium quite effectively, and then also introduced us to the kidnapped children, the Gobblers, Daemons, and a whole lot more. For non-readers, there is a lot that needs to be taken on within the first few episodes. The good news, though, is that once you start to have your feet wet in this world, we imagine that it starts to become a little easier from there.
We know that, at least so far, viewers in Britain have embraced His Dark Materials quite thoroughly — it’s become one of the biggest hits of the year for BBC One, and that’s just through live viewership alone.
