Fresh Off the Boat ending; season 6 will be final season

Following six seasons on ABC, it appears as though the run of Fresh Off the Boat is now officially coming to a close.

Today, the network confirmed that the comedy series, one of the few on all television to feature a predominant Asian-American cast, will be wrapping up its run with a series finale airing this winter. Any show that runs for six years has a lot to be proud of, especially in a world where there are so many shows that it can be tough for any of them individually to find all that much of a place. Nonetheless, here the series found a mighty-fine way to figure it out.

The shame, of course, is that the series ending has led to a lot of jokes about star Constance Wu, who publicly expressed displeasure about the show being renewed for a sixth season due to some film offers that she would be forced to turn down. Constance did put herself in a position to be a subject of ridicule, but all those headlines due take away somewhat from the achievements of the rest of the cast and crew. Sure, the ratings for season 6 leave a lot to be desired, and that’s probably one part of why Fresh Off the Boat is ending. Yet, we think that ultimately there’s a lot for everyone involved to be proud of — it’s a comedy that celebrates Asian-American culture, while also providing entertainment that is suitable for all audiences.

In a statement, here is some of what network programming head Karey Burke had to say on the subject:

“We couldn’t be prouder of this game-changing show and the impact it has had on our cultural landscape … The success of Fresh Off the Boat has helped pave the way for inclusion throughout the industry. Nahnatchka Khan and her brilliant creative team have created an unforgettable series with an Asian-American family front and center, something that hadn’t been done in two decades. The cast, led by Randall Park and Constance Wu, is one of the finest and funniest on television. We’ll miss the Huang family and are eternally grateful for the incredibly heartfelt stories they have told these past six seasons.”
