Dancing with the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba on voting, Sean Spicer

There’s a new Dancing with the Stars controversy brewing, and in a lot of ways, it’s precisely what everyone could’ve predicted. The moment that Sean Spicer was cast this season, it went without saying that he would make it further than he should on the merit of dancing. Instead, he’s around on the basis of popularity.

Is that fine? It’s definitely allowed, but this is not a situation where everyone is voting for the former White House Press Secretary based on what they’re seeing on TV. Instead, we’ve seen online that there are many voters who aren’t even watching the show and are doing this for political reasons. The voting structure is done in a way where anyone can vote and there are some clear issues with that. Unfortunately, it also feels difficult to find a solution — maybe you can insert some sort of trivia question that folks have to answer before voting, but maybe that’s unfair for people who are watching and just haven’t had a chance to see it yet.

In the end, this is where you have to blame casting and/or the producers for putting contestants on the show who are going to be so divisive. and who are going to inspire so much voting from non-viewers.

For the judges, they are absolutely feeling aggravated by some of what they’re seeing, especially since Sean’s presence is now causing good dancers like Kate Flannery, Karamo, and Sailor Brinkley-Cook to be eliminated. Check out what he had to say on the subject via Us Weekly:

“My reaction to Sean being saved, it’s frustrating … There are really great dancers being sent home, but that is part of our show. It’s always been the audience and the judges’ perspective… I can’t be mad at it, but it’s frustrating.”

In the end, we don’t think that Sean is going to win — eventually, there will be so few contestants left that the votes could end up being dispersed a little differently. Yet, don’t be shocked if he makes it to the final five or final four.
