Mayans MC renewed for season 3 by FX; Elgin James to be showrunner

Mayans MC

We suspected that the following news was going to be coming, but today, it’s official: A Mayans MC season 3 is coming over to FX.

Today, the network confirmed the news in a statement, and also made it clear that you are going to be seeing co-creator Elgin James take on the role of day-to-day showrunner. He’s been operating as co-showrunner for the first two years alongside Sons of Anarchy creator and franchise guru Kurt Sutter. As you may know already, Sutter was fired earlier this fall after a series of clashes with the network and some of the new leadership that it has under the Disney umbrella.

In a statement, here is what FX Networks’ own Nick Grad had to say about the show coming back:

“We’re happy to continue telling the story of Mayans M.C. with our partners at Fox 21 and excited that Elgin James has earned the opportunity to become the series’ showrunner … Kurt Sutter identified and chose Elgin as his partner on the show from the outset and Elgin has been instrumental to the success of the series, leveraging his experience and creative vision to make Mayans M.C. with this incredible cast, crew and creative team.”

In emphasizing James’ importance to the series, we do feel like FX is doing whatever it can to stress further that they have someone on board who is the right man for the job, someone who Kurt himself approved of. None of his issues prior to his departure had to do with Elgin, who was experienced with some of the subject matter and served as a perfect conduit to this world. Even if Sutter were to remain involved with FX, the plan was still for him to be taking more of a back seat in terms of day-to-day duties.

With the finale coming on FX tomorrow, we have a feeling that we’ll get a chance to see a third season at some point in 2020, at least if the show can stay on the same trajectory that it’s been.
