The search for a new member of the Law & Order: SVU season 21 team is officially over. After all, Jamie Gray Hyder has been promoted to series regular!
As confirmed via Hyder herself on social media, her character of Kat Azar-Tamin is going to be making her presence felt on the series for quite some time. This is a character who started off her run in the premiere, and since that time has joined SVU as a Detective. She has been able to showcase some of her skills and yet, there is still more news and information that is going to be revealed through the rest of the season. (Of course, it’s a rarity that SVU spends a lot of time on the personal lives of any of the characters — it tends to focus more on the cases, the survivors, and finding a way in order to get justice.)
Over the past few years, one of the calling cards on SVU has been stability within the Squad Room. After all, we saw for some time Rollins, Carisi, Benson, and Fin were all driving the metaphorical ship, and the changes came about from the prosecutor side of things. We saw Barba leave the series and, soon after that, Stone leave the series. Carisi is now over on the legal side of the show, while we now have Kat working in his place.
We feel like she’ll get her sea legs under her in no time — she’s got one of the best crews around her led by the recently-named Captain Benson. She’s got more authority than ever, and we think of that as a good thing since she will use the leadership role in absolutely the right way. Think of this as her doing everything that she can in order to make sure that other people understand what it means to be a great member of the squad or an influence when it comes to bringing about justice.
