The Affair series finale spoilers: Preparing for Whitney’s wedding

The Affair

This weekend, The Affair series finale is going to arrive on Showtime — and it’s going to be dramatic. It’s Whitney’s wedding, and we already have a sense that the bride is freaking out right before the wedding.

So what sort of conflict is spawning out on Whitney’s wedding day? Well, it seems like some of it is tied to the bride not really wanting her mother there. To some extent, we get it — Whitney feels like her mom is being way too protective of Noah, especially when you think about what she revealed to her in terms of the hot-tub incident. As with almost ALL things pertaining to The Affair, there are two clear schools of thought here. There is the argument you could make that Whitney is being overly selfish by being so harsh on her mother, especially when she notes that the only reason she is still invited is because of “optics.” (Watch a preview here for more of what we’re talking about.)

Yet, you can also make the argument here that Whitney is justified in her rage — she feels like her feelings don’t matter in the eyes of her mother, and that even after the Vanity Fair scandal, Helen is still standing by Noah to a great an extent. Some of the things that he did are horrible and yet, Noah did save Helen’s life on this past episode. He made the right decision pulling her from that car during the wildfire; he also carried her after she was bitten by a snake. Whitney doesn’t have to change how she feels about her dad just because of what happened with the wildfire, but it does inform Helen’s perspective perhaps now more than ever.

Based on Whitney’s attitude and also Noah’s isolation from the wedding, it doesn’t feel like closure is coming easy…

Below, you can hear from Dominic West and Maura Tierney as they reflect on this series, and all of the time that they’ve spent playing these fantastic roles over the years. The Affair is an emotional, powerful work of entertainment — it’s been difficult at times, but we are sure going to miss it.
