How did Mehcad Brooks leave Supergirl season 5, James Olsen?
Well, James Olsen’s departure at the end of Sunday’s new episode, and in a way that did feel on some level sudden. After being a part of the big-city life in National City, James is now heading home, intent on using the power of the pen and the press in order to ensure that the right stories are being reported to some of the right people. He didn’t care for Rojas’ techniques, so this was the proper way for him to go out and stake a claim elsewhere.
With this being said, though, we should also note that this marks an end to one of the Arrowverse’s most polarizing characters. There was a lot of stuff with James that could have proved interesting, including his history with Superman, his leadership role at CatCo, or his status at times as Guardian. Yet, in the end, the writers rarely found the right way to make him fit, and a part of the problem right away may have come via the relationship between him and Kara Danvers. The romantic storyline between the two in the early going didn’t quite work, and that was one of the reasons why it went by the wayside and wasn’t referenced all that much after that. The same goes for the crush that Winn had on her in the early going.
While James is gone from the series, there are going to be some other opportunities to see his legacy continue — after all, we will have a chance to see his sister Kelly continue as a key part of the show, especially thanks to the relationship with Alex. Kara will also continue to use some of the lessons that she learned from James over the years in order to ensure that she remains as good at her job as she can possibly be.
James is now gone, but we have a good feeling that he will certainly not be forgotten.
