Cloak & Dagger canceled by Freeform; why isn’t season 3 happening?

Cloak and Dagger

There’s some breaking news coming out from the world of Freeform … but it’s not good for Cloak & DaggerThe Marvel series has been canceled after just two seasons, and at the moment, it’s hard to determine where a future home could be.

In a lot of ways, the move isn’t a huge shock — especially when you look back at the numbers for the second season. The show generated just a 0.1 rating — the primary measure that most networks out there tend to look at. There is a tendency for shows with a younger average audience to look towards watching via non-linear means (take streaming services or DVRs), and we get that; yet, in doing, it does become harder for shows overall to succeed.

In a statement via Deadline, here is what the network had to say in a statement:

“We are so proud of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger and the trailblazing stories this series told … We are also grateful to our incredible talent Oliva Holt and Aubrey Joseph for bringing these beloved characters to life, and showrunner Joe Pokaski for his vision. We’d like to thank our partners at Marvel Television for a wonderful two seasons and are we are hopeful that we can find another project together.”

Is there a chance for another season somewhere else?

We’d love to say that there is a chance, especially since it feels as though a show like Cloak & Dagger would be a perfect fit over for a streaming service like Hulu — especially since Hulu shares a parent company to Marvel. Yet, we also don’t get the sense that there is immediate activity towards picking the show up, and if the series was going to move to Hulu, couldn’t they have negotiated this in advance of a cancellation? Maybe there was, and this is why it took so long in order to announce the series’ fate one way or another.
